Just remember a hysterectomy on a woman is around 10-25K and it's the same surgery! Same Doctorates, nurses, iv fluids, antibiotics, anesthesia, surgery room and lights, gerny beds, stainless steal kennels, sterilized garments/bedding/towells auto claved expensive surgery equipment but less recovery time. Also if the female is not drugged properly or kept calm after, the dog could get a hernia. So anything under 300 is a deal in my mind. But remember to watch out for some clinics that have spay and neuter days. Some hospitals do not autoclave their instruments between surgeries because it takes 45 min to autoclave and most clinics only have 3-10 sets of surgery tools. Also anesthesia cartridges are very expensive and the dogs are not always completely under to save the sedation. You must also make sure that there is a skilled vet with the knowledge of different breed reactions to this recovery. Dogs with short muzzles have a harder time cooling their brains so you need to have someone that is knowledgeable in the enestesia timing and the recuperation. So finding a "deal" could actually endanger your pet if you don't do your research. Always get the blood work done to make sure your pets enzymes are up to par to filter out this heavy sedation and very invasive surgery. Some dogs have blood disorders that can have cuwagulation problems. So make sure 1. Look on the BBB or the Oregon veterinarian board to see if the surgeon has any claims or complaints against them. 2. Ask questions (if the vet rushes you or is condescending or unfriendly to your pet, get out). 3. Always get the blood work done, even if the dog has had surgery before, there may be an underlying issue you may not know about.
4.Ask about the recovery time and always make sure your pet gets iv fluids during the surgery and the recovery. 5.Make sure your pet is calm and or sedated with plenty of pain medication. 6. Remember that this is a complete removal of your female dogs entire sexual organs. Just because vets charge low rates does not mean you can take this surgery lightly. Veterinarians had to "lower" their fees for animals or else we would have even more of an epidemic regarding canine overpopulation. 7. There are arguments about joint development verses habits of procreation. So in other words some people choose to spay or neuter later, some scientific studies have shown that the hormones that the sexual organs produce actually help joint development. But then you have to deal with the frustration based habits by lack of procreation, such as marking, constant searching for a mate and often less ability to concentrate on commands when other unaltered dogs are around or have "marked" their territory. Recall may be much more difficult in the park if your dog is distracted with other dogs that are also not fixed. The smell of the hormones in and unaltered dog may cause fights and can change the dichotomy of the situation faster than the average pet owner can catch. I have seen in the park many unaltered males and females get into fights faster and much more often then fixed animals because not only does it confuse the situation but it can also be a threat, regardless of who may be offensive or provoke.

If you or someone you know needs a low cost spay option, go to... http://www.poppainc.org/spayneuter.asp . There is a printable coupon. I was happy to see my vet (Burlingame Vet Clinic) participates with POPPA in helping to control the pet population... And I can tell you they take wonderful care of my critters!

we are taking our puppy (chihuahua) female in for a spay apt in december and they told us it would be around 360.00. It included her last rabies vaccine from her puppy series and the pre screening blood work and post op pain killers, also a microchip. I thought that sounded a little high too but it is good to know I am in the ball park. Did you ask them to break down the cost for you?

I agree with you on all the things that have to be done during a female dog spay. I lived in Oregon for 42 years, around the Corvallis area. Within the past two years I had my Aussie spayed and it was 650.00, the vet gave a 200 certificate for spaying so it ended up at 450. I had her spayed at my regular vet down in Oregon. We built a house in the state of Washington and have been here for some years but still have a business in Oregon so we are there a lot. Just kept the same vet. My neighbor up here in Wa just had her 7 month old boston terrier spayed and she said it was 110. I said you are kidding. So I called around the Sequim, Wa are to a couple vets and that was about the going rate. Why is Oregon so high in vet costs or why is Washington so low? My jack russell makes urate bladder stones and had 2 surgeries in Oregon and 1 in Washington and the cost was comparable. So maybe it is just the cost to neuter or spay a dog.

I ended up taking my dog to Companion Pet Clinic in Gresham, and it cost under $100 there! For all other vet services I'll go to my usual vet nearby my here in Lake Oswego, but they we asking just too much!
