That is exactly right. The well brushed and de-shedded coat will allow air to circulate through out the coat helping keep the pet cooler. The short shaved coat will lie flatter and tighter to the body holding in the heat as well as absorbing more heat.
Good for you for educating owners and standing up for the pooches!

I am with Deena on this... I don't agree with shaving labs or pugs etc... and a 10 would take alot off . However they need this coat for protection.
I have done it before but honestly it's not good for their coats or their skin either.

Shaving a pug/lab coat with a 10 would take off a lot, but I will not do it. I had 3 come in within the past 3 days wanting this and I will not do it. A personal choice. There are plenty of groomer who will, I am just not one of them. Dogs coats are made to protect them and a well cared for coat will provide insulation from the heat. I find more people want it for shedding. It will not reduce shedding. The shedding hair is just shorter making it less obvious. Simply put, brushing and deshedding is the best and safest way to beat the heat and reduce shedding.
As for the schools of thought I really don't know what they are. I just do what the coat calls for. So I guess I am not clear on what the schools of thoughts are. Are you meaning to shave or not to shave? Pros/cons of shaving short hair? Not sure what you are after.

Hello Sandra.
This breed is a very groomed dog, but most important it should look like it is not. This breed is often toweled(straightened and flattened). A good clipper such as the speed feed by Laube and a fantastic pair of blenders will be your best friend. Most important is to know your standard and be able to identify the short comings and strong points of your dog. This will guide how you groom your dog. The throat and pads are clipped and the rest is thinned/blended. The back can be deshed, bur be careful not to remove too much.

Hello everyone!
I'm new to the group because, while I know how to groom my Cavaliers, I am now the co-owner of "Rose" a Brittany, and while her main man is working on finishing her FC/AFC (field) championship, I'm going to work on finishing her bench championship... And I am pretty much a neo-phyte about grooming a Brittany for show. I mean, sheesh, Labradors and Cavaliers are a no-trim breed for field or show or whatever, but I'm learning that there is quite a bit to be done to take the huntin' dawg out of the field and take the lovely lady into the show ring! Any suggestions?!? I am now the owner of Landris (sp?) clippers & blades, and have added a few other things to my grooming kit, but I am very eager for any suggestions!

thanks!
Sandra

This Wed will be the last until early Dec for me to groom and train at the OHS. Thanksgiving boarding will start trickling in after that at my stores. So if you want to go then I'll be there this next Wed.

I would love to thank you for the invite. I train the dogs in the morning then groom OHS dogs and cats in the early afternoon. Several of my customers have joined the OHS to get free training from me while we work with the dogs. Win Win, I have yet to find someone to help me with the cats and the techs are super busy.

I did a summer class with OHS and loved it. I would like to do it again.
Sunday, do you want help with the grooming side of things on some Wednesdays at OHS? I could come one or 2 a month. You should come to my salon for 1st Thursday. There is an event for Oregon Dog Rescue and I will probably work on my candy corn dog for fun.

OOOOOHHHHH OHMYGOD!!!!! We can do visits to high schools!!!!!!!! I will look into it now. I was asked to do a couple carrier things a while back but you know I turned it into an educational thing. OMG, none of the kids new vacs, brush or how often to feed or what to feed. They were all programed by the tv.. I swear if someone compares me to Caesar Milan I will crash my car into a brick building!!!!! At least he emphasizes exercise and training. But it's the aggressive choke thing with fear and when he shoves those dogs in with each other I really want to throw him into the Lion den at the zoo. I know for a fact daycares that base there policies on his tactics. Then, when they are so screwed up these "placare" places throw bark collars on the dogs. ARG!!!!!! I am hoping at this upcoming gathering at the OHS we can decide on legislations for these places!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's all I have to say about that,,well not really.
