It wasn't easy saying good bye to Shasta. Yes, she was 16 years old, but she was sweet and kind to her last breath. I rescued her when she was 10 and I thought she'd last a few years. I would give her the life she deserved for her last years. Little did I know she would be the energizer bunny and just keep going....even until the day before her seizure.
She loved, loved to dig. Digging and panting and running away. But, now that she's gone, I miss all those annoying things more than I can explain.
When I get her ashes back, I'm going to dig a hole in the garden and bury her beneath it. I'll line the hole with little rocks, so there will always be a place for her to rest in. I bet right now in heaven, she's digging!
Bye, bye sweet Shasta. I'll miss you!

I am glad this group is here. I know how some of you are talking about that loving one pet is different when you get another pet but the love is still there just different. I lost a beloved pet several years ago, I couldnt even think about getting another pet till about 2 yrs ago that is when i found my Elvis and he has brought so much joy in my life since that tragic loss years ago. I will always remember Winston though cause he was such a great dog, but as i look at Elvis curled up beside me snoring away..all i can do is smile and know that if Winston was around, he would approve of Elvis and would have been the best of friends. RIP Winston! Mommy loves you!

Hi all,
http://www.prayersonthewind.com/
I discovered these Pet Loss Flags from another social networking site. They are really beautiful and moved me very much. I have an older dog who is in her fading years, and all I can do is wonder that she is here each and every day. Grateful, and planning on getting a flag when the time comes...but it will always come too soon.

Hello-
I'm glad this group is here. I hope that as people find this site they will post more comments. I know when I lost my golden retriever several years ago, I had a big hole in my heart for the longest time. It is funny as I sit here now with two dogs at my feet and one asleep on the rug that I love them all, each in a different way. I never gave birth to children, so I have always felt that this is my form of mothering and I understand how mothers say that they never think they could love a second child as much as they love the first. Then the next kid comes along and there is that love again, different but love all the same.
I do wish that all the pets I loved would have stayed forever. I figure they are teaching me how to be right here in the moment.

Hi,
Thanks for starting this group, I think it's such an important area. About 40% of my work as a communicator is dealing with animals who are transitioning or who have died. It's kind of my area of specialty and I love helping people and animals through what can be a very difficult time.

I agree Rubi, I think older animals are extra special.

They say losing a parent is like losing a tether to the universe. I think losing a most loved pet is like that too.

This is such a great group to be part of! I can't count on both of my hands all of the pets that I've lost in my lifetime. It has to be one of (if not THE) hardest thing to go through. I'm a big softy when it comes to the older pets... they are the most special of the bunch!
