Hi all!
As the legislative session rolls around again, it is imperative that we stay connected and on top of any breed specific legislation that may be introduced. Please feel free to join our group by visiting www.meetup.com/portlanders-against-breed-bans

Thanks!

I have a great insurance agent who is with State Farm and has never ever said a word about my Rottie. Let me know if you would like her name and info. I think she has a GSD.

Hello to all! We're currently looking to move in the next month or so. If anyone knows of a house in the close-in Eastside PLEASE send me a message. Def finding it hard with a Doberman. Basically I've accepted the fact that a rental service is out of the picture. Apparently it violates most insurance policies now...what a load of BS. Sorry about that...had to vent =)

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Cheers!

Hi all,
Just wanted to send out another reminder that my group, Portlanders Against Breed Bans, is a great way to stay involved and updated on proposed legislation that would owners of "dangerous" breeds, and is also a great way to help educate the public about our misunderstood dogs.

Check it out at www.meetup.com/portlanders-against-breed-bans

Thanks!

Hi,
I am a parent of a GSD. I love her to death but.....she requires a whole different approach than my other two mutts. Because she came to me late in puppyhood with no socialization, I have spent the past year trying to build her confidence. Also, the amount of exercise she needs is astronomically higher than other breeds. The good news is, she is a quick learner and all the walking and running we have done has gotten me in better shape! She has honestly taught me more about dog behavior than any book or any training I have had. She has absolutely made me a better trainer.

Hi Everyone,

I don't think I'm a parent of a "vicious" breed, but I was watching a show the other night that said Golden Ret. are one of the top dogs for dog bites. I would have never thought that.

I've always wanted to get a german shepherd, but think I need to learn a lot more about them before I make that kind of commitment, and wanted to see what other parents of this breed have to say about them.

I had a great experience with my pitbull last month that I thought I would share. I went lure coursing with her in the morning and she was the usual screaming meemie about the lure. That afternoon, she worked as a the neutral dog for a Canine Good Citizen Test that I was evaluating. I love that my dog can go from wanting to "get that white plastic thing" to being a calm and well behaved tester dog. I have heard other pitbull owners comment that "I can't teach my dog to walk nicely on a leash because we do weight pull and I don't want to kill their drive"-this, along with other such ridiculous statements, I think illustrates how little credit some people give their dogs. It is no different than a seeing eye dog that knows he is supposed to work when his harness is on but can be a 'normal' dog when not wearing his equipment. Training, training, training!! By the way, the morning of the lure coursing I decided that I did NOT want my dog to be a screaming maniac when she was not on the field so I spent the hour in between runs training her to be "calm" while other dogs were running. The best we could get was a sit-stay with screaming! :-)

I just wanted to share one of my favorite videos. This was done by the daughter of a customer for a school project.

I hear an incrediable amount of terrible stories because of the type of dog I own. I often have people come up to me and ask whether or not I heard about "that story..." Its depressing and frusterating, especially when I know what I know after reading The Pitbull Placebo by Karen Delise. Such an amazing book, and its first part is totally focused on media reporting on dog attacks. The history of the media and dog stories is so interesting- only later does she address pitbulls and other "vicious" breeds in media today. Its an excellent book for anyone to read- If anyone has positive dog stories, especially those involving maligned breeds- do let me know! I can use a cheer up now and again, that's for sure!
