This is very interesting! Not that I would ever give my dog beer or medicine, but I didn't know about avocados and onions!

Bad news foods
Avocados
They contain a toxic component called persin, which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals. This fruit is very toxic to dogs, cats and most animals.
Beer
Alcoholic beverages can cause the same damage to an animal's liver and brain as they cause in humans. But the effects can be d…

This weekend Bess and I are heading up to her breeder's for the Mt. Baker Kennel Club dog show!! I'm super excited about it! This'll be our very first show together as a team. Bess has been shown by the breeder at a match and a show and I've shown a few other danes previously. I've got a lot of errands to run tomorrow and packing to get done. Not to mention a dog to clip, dremmel her nails (Heffner's gonna get his done as well because it's part of our weekly routine), and bathe!
I don't have hi…

We had a lovely time this weekend. Went out to my parents. They live in the country and are completely fenced so Pixie gets to run around like a crazy boy and play with one of my Moms Border Collies.
Posy takes the two of them on long 'walks' which consist of them running in huge silly circles while she runs to catch up. They return soaking wet (wet grass and water tubs) and get washed off and semi- dried, Pixie exhausted, my moms guy hardly tired a'tall!
Despite his relative good shape- Pixie a…

Are you aware that many dogs each year die because their collar gets caught on something and they asphyxiate? I know, your dogs have always worn traditional collars and NEVER hung themselves of died. I understand....I felt the same way. Until I read the following statistics:

AND the following stories of people who lost a dog due to strangulation:

We had so much fun going to the Doggie Dash, playing Frisbee, seeing our friends, getting a massage from Rubi
healnw, seeing the gang at
LexiDog, getting treats from
bonejourdogbakery and just walking around.
There were so many wonderful dogs and people, it was great to see such a good turnout. Here are a few of our quickly taken pictures.

It's almost effortless to make good portraits of Lab mixes, though I think I might be a little biased because I have two of them at home.

This was sent to me in an email and it is a nice reminder of why we all love dogs so much:
A Dogs Purpose
From a 6-year-old
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthan…

I just thought I'd post a couple of new photos of Dexter. The first one is an x-ray they took before surgery. Both hips are very displaced - but the left is floating about out and above where it should be - by quite a lot. The second photo is today, Dexter resting in his new abode. He and I spend a lot of time there - and we have a web cam in place so we can watch him even when we are not in the room. He's doing really well.

We live in Miami, home to more biting insects than anyplace else on the planet: Mosquitoes (year round), fire ants, fleas, ticks, no-see-ums....you name it - we've got it. Since I am practicing natural rearing on Asher, we use no flea/tick meds such as K9 Advantix, Frontline, or Advantage. The reason is because it is believed that these chemicals, although effective on fleas & ticks, weaken the dog's immune system and "Life Force" (known as Chi in Chinese Medicine). There are many holistic v…

HOW IT BEGAN:
Asher is the healthiest dog I have ever known. However, recently he began having intermittant diarrhea. This began shortly after the dogs at the dog park had the same thing, so I assumed he had picked something up there. I immediately put Asher on a 24 hr fast, as this normally allows the gastrointestinal tract to "rest" and recover from whatever irritant caused the diarrhea. As soon as I began feeding Asher again, the diarrhea recurred. I called my allopathic (regular) vet, who sa…

I have been gone this week for work, and am glad to be home. I arrived back late Thursday night, just in time to snuggle up to Dexter for a while before dropping him off at NWVS early Friday morning. My husband was nice enough to put a webcam in the living room, so I was able to "tune in" to the KDEX and WZTA channels any time I felt the need to connect. Not much movement from Dex over the week - except when he was completely destroying electronic equipment.
But that's another story. Let's just…

Bailey is a testament to the unbreakable spirit that all dogs seem to have. Even though his legs don't work his tail still wags and nothing slows him down. I have a feeling he won't have to wait long for a new home.

When we first found Pixie via Craigslist, we thought he was a short haired boy. The vet gave him a good look over and said the 'nomming' could have been what the previous owner claimed- him being roughed about by some big dogs. Supposedly he spent all his time outside with two big dogs and they were getting rid of him because he was not getting enough attention.
We certainly agreed with that. He came without collar or leash- and apparently had never had one on. He learned fairly quickly. When h…

Dexter is now nearly a full head taller than his sister, the lovely (if high-strung) Zeta. Yet again he grew overnight, and then again while I was at work yesterday. How does that happen? He will definitely be a BIG Bionic Dog. I feel less sure that he will be ready for surgery by the 3rd of May. But that's really okay. It gives us a chance to finish the preparations.
People have been incredible. This is really what community is all about. Thanks to the community (particularly Angie!), we now h…

I was thinking today about a new dog bed but with so many on the market I wonder which ones are the best? Does anyone have favorites? I bought one from DoodleDuds (I think that was the name?) at the Pet and Companion Fair but unfortunately Ruby likes to make nests out of her blankets and caused it to rip at the seams! The Cloud ones look nice, but if you have a favorite let me know!

We live in a duplex with several other duplexes around us. We are very lucky to have a small yard and some space for gardening and play :0
Several other tenants have dogs and except for the large yellow spots in the grass problems are minimal :)
One of our neighbors has a younger black lab- they got him as a puppy and he was darling :) I grew up in a family that had extensive dog kennels and did a lot of obedience work so I am rather spoiled for plain pets, I like the order and safety of well- t…

This is a developing park in the north part of the Pearl District. Right now it is a big open field for dogs to run and play. Every time Ellie and I go there to play, there is always a lot of discussion about what's going to happen with "The Field".
There are a lot of opinions about this new park, so I thought I would start a blog about it. Right now, the Pearl District doesn't have a dog park and there are a lot of dogs in the neighborhood, a lot. All living in condo's and lofts with no backya…

In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and starved him to death.
For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece'…

When my extended family decided to do a weekend at the Oregon Coast, the major dilemma that cropped up was:
how are we going to find a place to rent that will accept the 6 total dogs that are in our family?
Browsing the Internet, I found Horizon Rentals. Most of their properties are located in the Lincoln City area of Oregon Coast. After looking through their pet friendly properties, I called to make sure what I read was correct. There is only a small fee for pets. You can have 1…

Thanks to some of our members we are even more aware of the puppy mill crisis. Oprah did a show about it on Friday. I also listed this in the forum with clickable links. Feel free to add other resources, including local ones that do amazing things like The Pixie Project and Project Pooch.
Here is a list from Oprah's website:
The following organizations and resources offer additional information on adopting animals and fighting back against puppy mills. Main Line Animal Rescue www.mlar.org The…

Quick update on Dex. We talked with Dr. Lozier's office yesterday to schedule the surgery. Apparently they had assumed Dexter was or would be done growing by the beginning of May. I should have suspected as much when they asked me repeatedly if I was SURE he was only 5 months! Well, yes I am - I first met him when he was 4 weeks old (see photo). In fact, he grew again Friday nigh…

I don't care what folks without dogs say, Dexter is my baby. And I, in turn, am his mother. So standing in NWVS last week and hearing that my baby (all of 5 months) needs to have both hips replaced to get him into adulthood was... hard. I was actually pretty proud of myself for not fainting. I saw spots, I got dizzy, I needed to stick my head between my legs without letting on to the doctor. I truly thought I was going to faint. Sure, part of it was the impending bill. But mostly, it was the tho…
