We are a week out of surgery #2. Or #2 and 3. In addition to doing the right hip, this surgery included a re-positioning of his right tibia. Poor Dex is really turning into the Bionic Dog. Two titanium hips and a metal plate on his right tibia. Sounds like a skier, not an 8-month-old puppy. Also, his mood just isn't as good. We have had two follow up trips to the vet - one about a possible infection (all clear, all clean) and the other to look at his right paw. It's curling under and dragging wh…

I just thought I'd post a couple of new photos of Dexter. The first one is an x-ray they took before surgery. Both hips are very displaced - but the left is floating about out and above where it should be - by quite a lot. The second photo is today, Dexter resting in his new abode. He and I spend a lot of time there - and we have a web cam in place so we can watch him even when we are not in the room. He's doing really well.

I have been gone this week for work, and am glad to be home. I arrived back late Thursday night, just in time to snuggle up to Dexter for a while before dropping him off at NWVS early Friday morning. My husband was nice enough to put a webcam in the living room, so I was able to "tune in" to the KDEX and WZTA channels any time I felt the need to connect. Not much movement from Dex over the week - except when he was completely destroying electronic equipment.
But that's another story. Let's just…

Dexter is now nearly a full head taller than his sister, the lovely (if high-strung) Zeta. Yet again he grew overnight, and then again while I was at work yesterday. How does that happen? He will definitely be a BIG Bionic Dog. I feel less sure that he will be ready for surgery by the 3rd of May. But that's really okay. It gives us a chance to finish the preparations.
People have been incredible. This is really what community is all about. Thanks to the community (particularly Angie!), we now h…

Thanks to everyone that has commented, called or sent messages. This is an incredible network! Dog lovers just ROCK!
Quick update on Dex. We talked with Dr. Lozier's office yesterday to schedule the surgery. Apparently they had assumed Dexter was or would be done growing by the beginning of May. I should have suspected as much when they asked me repeatedly if I was SURE he was only 5 months! Well, yes I am - I first met him when he was 4 weeks old (see photo). In fact, he grew again Friday nigh…

I'd love a chance to talk with you before the big day with Dr. Lozier, especially considering the type of surgery. Give me a call. 246-0089.

i have received many responses regarding Dexter's care. Give me a call so I can get your email to forward them along. People book quickly so you are going to want to jump on one.
I worked for Back on Track Vet Rehab for almost 3 years. They board special-needs cases such as Dexter's, but you'd have to take him to see Dr. Shaw first (or she'd at least have to do a "drop off" exam). Which surgeon are you using? I'm assuming if you've been to NWVS it Lozier? They all have their approaches to post-op care, but a double replacement will need REAL expertise in terms of confinement with rehab -- and Dexter will definitely need rehab. I have a tremendous amount of information & resources about and experience with rehab and physical therapy (pre-op, post-op, neurological, congenital, arthritis, and other issues/conditions) -- not only in my veterinary work, but with my own special needs dogs as well. I'd love to talk with you about this -- why don't you give me a call so I can give you some very good, in-depth information. 503-246-0089. Thanks!
Laurie
